Chapter 18

(Harley)

“Harles, you’re disrupting my concentration.” Ace sits at the edge of my bed, sorting our bullets, knives and guns into ten different piles. Até must have given our packs back after Uri and I won. Ace looks fresh and clean, his wet, dark hair soaking his shirt as water droplets drip down his neck without bothering him.

“Sorry my breathing is an inconvenience to you,” I mutter, rolling onto my back. When I look up, I find that the dagger Até threw at my knees after the fight is jammed into the wall above my head, the snake’s ruby eyes sending chills up my spine. I pull it from the wall. The lightness and the ease with which it balances on one finger surprises me. On its freshly polished silver is the same writing as engraved on the blade of Jasper’s sword, ‘Sacrifice For Our People.’ Ace ignores me, sliding the bullets into leather pouches.

The hut we’re in is much bigger than the armoury, more airy and homey. There’s a window by my bed, light seeping through the big leaf covering it. Somehow the inside seems cleaner, with rough wood covering the ground. A large sheet separates my bed from the rest of the room. Through the gaps, I can see that the floor is scattered with makeshift beds, clothes and blankets.

“What happened while I was out?” I ask, but Ace doesn’t acknowledge me until everything is in its proper bag. Once he has all of our packs under the bed, he starts to talk.

“The whole place broke out into a kind of organized chaos. Most of the civilians formed a protective circle around the medical hut, calling for Até to show her face and give you a formal apology. It was actually rather funny because they didn’t know how to rebel against their leader. They made it look like they were calling for blood, but they only wanted her to apologize.” He smiles, replaying the events in his head.

“Did she?”

“They think she did, but in reality, she waited for you to get to our hut, then jammed the dagger over your head and whispered something in your ear. She almost provoked us to attack her, but one of the guards got hold of Johnny and knocked him out so easily we decided to back off. We didn’t want to lose more healthy people, ya know.” He grabs the dagger from me, tracing his fingertips over the blade and looking deeply into the snake’s eyes, as if he can hear it hissing.

“Ace, focus,” I say, starting to notice the perspiration clinging to my body. I push the blanket off me, sitting up and realizing I’m only in my rainbow sports bra, which is covered in so much dirt and sweat it makes me feel grimy. I fling my hands across my chest, blushing. Ace tosses me his shirt, pretending to cover his eyes, but he peeks through his fingers.

“Not like I haven’t seen it before,” he laughs, shaking his wet hair over me like a dog.
